The Champions League title is a prestigious achievement that not all teams can achieve. There have been so many excellent teams that only lacked a bit of luck to reach the threshold of paradise. Here are 7 such teams.
Rangers of Coach Walter Smith in the 1990s used to be a very strong team in Europe. In the 1992/93 season, this team won the domestic treble but could not reach the Champions League final. Rangers continued to dominate Scottish football until the late 1990s but never once approached the European title like the 1992/93 season.
The bat has made it to the Champions League final twice in 1999/2000 and 2000/01 but lost to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. In the 2001/02 season, Valencia did not reach the European Cup final but won the La Liga title convincingly with such players as Roberto Ayala, Ruben Baraja and Pablo Aimar. They continued to win 1 La Liga championship 2003/04, 1 UEFA Cup 2004 and 1 European Super Cup 2004. Since then, Valencia has not been able to return to the position of a big man.
The Gunners had the unbeaten and most impressive Premier League 2003/04 Premier League season. Unfortunately, they cannot succeed in the European arena. Arsenal lost 3-2 after 2 matches against their compatriot Chelsea. After the second leg to lose to the opponent 1-2 at Highbury, coach Arsene Wenger blamed the players who were too scared and did not dare to move forward. A great pity for the unbeaten season.
CHELSEA 2005 – 2006
Chelsea’s domestic dominance over the 2005 and 2006 seasons is undisputed. Jose Mourinho’s army set countless records on the way to winning the first British championship in decades. However, in Europe, they were constantly stopped by Liverpool and Barca. The biggest regret for the “Special One” during his time at Chelsea was probably the failure to win the Champions League silver trophy.
ATLETICO MADRID 2014 – 2016
Diego Simeone’s team may not be the most attractive team at this stage but deserves to be the most effective and hard to beat team. Rojiblanco ended a decade of alternating domination of La Liga of Barca and Real when he ascended to the throne in the 2013/14 season. They also have two more Champions League final but they both suffered a painful defeat before the team in the same city Real Madrid.
JUVENTUS 2015 – 2019
Since 2011, Juventus have won eight Serie A titles in a row but cannot win the European arena once. The old lady twice reached the Champions League final in 2015 and 2017 but lost to the Spanish representatives of Barca and Real. In the 2017/18 season, they stopped in the quarter-finals against Real because of the shine of Cristiano Ronaldo. In the 2018/19 season, Juventus lost to Ajax in the quarterfinals despite bringing CR7.
MAN CITY 2016 – NOW
Since taking over the team in 2016, coach Pep Guardiola has built a strong dynasty, constantly breaking Premier League records. However, the Champions League dream still looks away from them. The highest achievement of the Green Man is still the semi-final of the 2015/16 season. With UEFA’s ban on playing, hanging on his head, it is not known when Man City can once stand on top of the Champions League.
