Mr. Toni Nadal – the former coach and uncle of Rafael Nadal, has revealed the reason why his grandson and Roger Federer will continue to play on the pitch.
The reasons to keep a rival couple in Tennis
“Rafa Nadal although has at the least three-four years of peak performance if the injuries aren’t serious. My nephew has maintained his passion for playing tennis and the incentive to play throughout his profession years.” Coach Toni Nadal shared with the Spanish sports newspaper. “Roger Federer is exactly the same. Both have the desire to win. They will continue to play because they have the same strong belief that they will gain more titles.”
Federer and Nadal are considered the two greatest players, at least in the history of men’s tennis. They ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the number of major titles of ATP Tour, and are considered as the face of the world felt. Federer has an artist style compared to Nadal with the style of a fighter. Federer is a grass specialist, Nadal is unmatched on clay.
Up to now, Nadal and Federer have had 40 encounters, with the Spanish player winning 24 matches. The last time they met in Wimbledon semifinals last year, where “Express Train” defeated Nadal in four sets. In those 40 matches, there were 20 times on hard courts (14 on indoor and 6 on outdoor), 16 on clay, and the remaining 6 on the grass. In terms of each surface, Federer dominates with the head-to-head ratio of 11-9 (hard court), 3-1 (grass field) and 5-1 (indoor hard court).
However, Nadal led 14-2 on clay and won 14 times in a total of 24 finals each faced each other. In the Grand Slams, Nadal also led Federer 10-4, including 6-0 at Roland Garros and 3-1 at the Australian Open. And the two players have never met at the US Open before.
The cohesion of two rivals – Nadal and Federer
“Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have a massive impact on the tennis world. When the game is over, there is no hatred between them. The relationship between the two people outside the court is very good and friendly,” he said. Toni Nadal added. Toni coached Nadal between 1990 and 2017, and for 27 years he helped Nadal win 16 Grand Slam titles.
The two opponents, with completely different styles, and fight each other for the lead. The fastidious, as well as ordinary fans, can watch and enjoy any competition between them. Some people like Federer’s delicate temper in the field because it makes the match easier, while some like Nadal’s fighting spirit and focus.
What makes this pair special is that after 15 years, they can still bring great tennis when confronted with each other. For example, the 2017 Australian Open final, when both were thought to be on the other side of the slope and inferior to Novak Djokovic. Victory 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 helped Federer defeat Nadal for the first time in a major tournament, since the 2007 Wimbledon final. Even most recently, when Federer defeated Nadal after four sets of matches in the semi-final of Wimbledon 2019, they still show how amazing the ability to play is top.
