The second leg of the 1/8 Champions League round March 10 witnessed a star shining brightly – Ilicic with impressive goalscoring goals that put his team into the quarterfinals and also helped him set up a great victory. Great as Lionel Messi and CR7 have done.
Surprised Ilicic “Phenomenon” C1 Cup wins over Ibra
On March 10, despite being a guest on the Mestalla field, without the audience (because of the Covid-19 pandemic) fought against the host of Valencia but “dark horse” Atalanta still excelled to win 4-3 in the second round of the Champions League. The result helped students and coach Gian Piero Gasperini win tickets to the quarterfinals with a staggering 8-4 score after winning Valencia 4-1 on February 20 at the first leg on the San Siro.
The hero of the Italian team was Josip Ilicic with an impressive poker for Atalanta to smash Valencia’s intention to swim upstream. A series of impressive records and milestones in his career have just called the attacking midfielder Slovenian.
Leveling Messi – CR7
At 32 years and 41 days old, Josip Ilicic has surpassed the famous Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (32 years and 20 days) to become the oldest player to set up a hat-trick away in the Champions League. Ibra had three goals against Anderlecht when PSG marched to Belgium in October 2013 in this prestigious arena.
Ilicic also became the first Slovenian player in hat-trick and poker history in the Champions League. Atalanta’s attacking midfielder has 14 goals in 2020, more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues (England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France).
Equally respectable when Josip Ilicic with the last poker game helped him become the third player in history to score 5 or more goals after two rounds of a knockout round in the Champions League, linking the “golden heel” of Lionel Messi (6 goals to help Barcelona defeat Bayer Leverkusen in 2011/12 season) and CR7 (5 goals to help Real Madrid eliminate Bayern Munich in 2016/17 season).
Ilicic is also only the fourth player to score at least 4 goals in a Champions League knockout round after Lionel Messi, Mario Gomez and Robert Lewandowski but he became the first person to score that feat on away field because the court is like those 3 stars.
Ilicic‘s managing team, Atalanta, became the first club to have the Champions League reach the quarter-finals for the first time since Leicester City did so in 2017. “La Dea” is also the first team of Italy did this 20 years after Lazio achieved such a feat in 2000.
Unfortunately for Ilicic and Atalanta, they will have to take a break from playing for nearly 3 weeks when Serie A is suspending because the Covid-19 pandemic is raging in the boot-shaped country. Atalanta is expected to return to play on April 4 as a guest of Cagliari in the round of 30 Serie A, the tournament that excellent Gasperini teachers and students are ranked fourth this season.
