The future of the German goalkeeper at Allianz has been made clear, when the 34-year-old star Neuer officially extended his contract with the club until June 2023.
“FC Bayern is pleased to announce that Neuer has renewed his contract with the club. He is the best goalkeeper in the world and our captain”, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge shared on the club’s official website on the evening of the 20th. / 5.
He signed a new contract with Bayern
Neuer’s future at Bayern has been a topic of discussion for a long time. In April, Kicker newspaper said, “Gray Lobster” does not meet the requirements of the German goalkeeper when the temple guard wants a new salary up to 20 million euros/season.
After that, Neuer was said to decide to stop the process of negotiating a contract extension with the club. Kicker described the goalkeeper as “feeling traumatized” for not meeting the salary requirements of the club.
From England, Chelsea was pleased to hear that Neuer and Bayern did not reach a mutual agreement. “The Blues” wants to take the guardian of the 2014 World Cup winner to Stamford Bridge to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga, who did not meet the club’s expectations.
Even the German press speculated that his future in Munich would only be counted day by day. Earlier, the Bavarian representative soon found a replacement for this talented goalkeeper. During the winter transfer window, Bayern won the signature of Alexander Nubel from Schalke 04.
Neuer’s contract extension with Bayern officially ended the problems between the two sides. However, it will create a new battle in the goal of the Bundesliga champions of the 2018/19 season.
In January, Sport Bild reported that Bayern’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic hoped Neuer would accept to step back to give the big stage to Nubel. However, the German star keeper bluntly rejected the offer.
Coach Guardiola wanted Neuer to play midfield
Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed coach Pep Guardiola had seriously intended to let Manuel Neuer play midfield when he led the team.
“Manuel Neuer introduced a new concept for goalkeeping and turned it into an art. I still remember that after Bayern won the Bundesliga, Pep was serious with the intention of putting him in midfield,” Rummenigge said.
He is amongst the best goalkeepers in the world. In addition to his amazing saves, he is also known for his ability to play with his feet above the players. Pep, meanwhile, is a coach who likes to experiment when he used Philipp Lahm and David Alaba to play as a midfielder.
“We had a hard time persuading Pep to drop this idea. We were afraid people would think this was arrogance. However, I still think that Neuer can play well in midfield,” CEO of Bayern Munich said.
Neuer moved to Bayern Munich in 2011. He is playing the ninth season with the Allianz Arena, after having achieved many successes in the past. With a hobby of intercepting as a defender, he is considered the birth of the concept of “sweeper goalkeeper”.
