Dortmund has confirmed they will not renew their contract with midfielder Mario Gotze meaning the 2014 World Cup champion will become a free agent by the end of the 2019/20 season.
Gotze’s former teammate in Germany, Bastian Schweinsteiger thinks that the 27-year-old will be a quality addition to every team.
Bastian Schweinsteiger still appreciates Mario Gotze
From the past few years, Mario Gotze is no longer a regular player in Dortmund. The current Ruhr team coach Lucien Favre himself claimed the 27-year-old did not fit the tactical system he was operating.
In March, Gotze announced that he wanted to leave Dortmund at the end of the 2019/20 season after the termination of the contract and finally, perhaps after failing to convince the German midfielder to change his mind, the BLD team manager also voiced admitting that Gotze will become a free agent.
Watching Gotze break up with Dortmund, a former teammate at Bayern Munich and Germany, Bastian Schweinsteiger expressed:
“I feel sorry that Gotze doesn’t continue to accompany Dortmund. The age of 27, 28 is the best time of a player’s career so I think he can still play well for many years to come.”
“There will be many clubs who want Gotze to sign this summer. With his ability, he can play well in every club. Quality and special contract costs nothing as he is a gift. “Good luck with every team. I hope Gotze will find a team that suits me.”
Dortmund coach fluffed with the prodigy Mario
Once upon a time, Mario Gotze was considered the No. 1 football prodigy in Germany. Remember the midfielder scored the only goal in the 2014 World Cup final, helping Germany beat Messi’s Argentina to the championship. However, in the last few years, precisely since joining Bayern Munich and then returning to Dortmund, Gotze’s career has been continuously declining. Currently in Dortmund, Gotze is just a proper reserve card.
Not long ago, Gotze confirmed he will break up with Dortmund after the contract expires at the end of the 2019/20 season. However, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke once expressed his hope that Gotze will stay at the club for at least another season.
But perhaps it’s just a courtesy because recently, coach Lucien Favre himself spoke at a press conference before the match with Wolfsburg in the 27th Bundesliga round on 23/5:
“I often use 3-4-3 diagrams and have talked to Mario Gotze about that. Unfortunately, this is not the right system for his style and forte. Gotze said he wants to play in the position of the guard and only maximizes the ability as a footballer right behind the center of the center, but in the 3-4-3 chart there is no room for such a household.
“There are plenty of matches in front of Dortmund, so Gotze’s chances are still there, but if he wants to play regularly, he has to change and adapt, of course.”
