Atletico after two consecutive summers set a club transfer record, Atletico is about to enter the period of austerity. While saying Los Rojiblancos can bring 2-3 players in the transfer window this summer, CEO Angel Gil Marin also confirmed that, will have to sell before buying.
THE FAILED SEASON – Atletico
The 2019/20 season can be considered a failed season for Atletico. Not only were they empty-handed, but they also soon stopped in the 1/16 round of the King’s Cup, the quarterfinals of the Champions League and ranked third in La Liga. The end caused the red-white half of Madrid to consider strengthening its forces to prepare for the upcoming campaign to conquer. And coach Diego Simeone has also said that he needs a goalkeeper, a left-back, a standing midfielder and a striker for the new season.
However, the Argentine strategist’s wish is unlikely to be fulfilled. Because after the summer pampered El Cholo by setting two consecutive transfer records of the club with Thomas Lemar (70 million euros) and Joao Felix (126 million euros), Atletico will not continue to inflate money. Los Rojiblancos CEO Gil Marin has just confirmed this when stating: “The transfer budget this season will not exceed 25% of the money we make from selling players.”
Up to now, Atletico has spent 63 million euros on shopping. But 56 million euros of this amount is to buy off Alvaro Morata from Chelsea under the previous agreement. In fact, they just spent 7 million euros to recruit goalkeeper Ivo Grbic from Lokomotiva Zagreb, to replace Antonio Adan to move to Sporting Lisbon in a free form. So why must this team start to hesitate after 2 summers? And which players will have to leave in this transfer window?
WHY DID TEAM POLICY BECOME DIFFICULTIES?
It is not difficult to find an answer to the first question. The disease situation has left this team with almost no revenue since March. In addition, they have not received the Champions League distribution from UEFA. That is not to mention, the heavy investment for the stars is causing the cost of salary and bonuses of Los Rojiblancos in the 2019/20 season to reach 348.5 million euros, exceeding the ceiling salary that La Liga organized applies to the club.
This fact makes Atletico on the one hand cut spending, on the other hand, seek a source of income to balance its finances. The fastest way is to sell players, especially those on high salaries. That is why they are giving the green light to Diego Costa, Thomas Lemar, Vitolo, Santiago Arias and even Angel Correa to leave in this transfer window.
Of these, just breaking up with the first 3 names, Atletico will save nearly 20 million euros of salary per year (Costa 8.5 million euros, Lemar 6, Vitolo 5). But the very high salary is also the obstacle that makes Los Rojiblancos difficult to liquidate the player. Not far, Flamengo and Palmeiras were once interested in Costa, but then both “ran away” because they could not meet the requirements of the Brazilian striker.
The irony for Atletico is that the player who receives the highest salary in the current team, Jan Oblak (10 million euros/year) wants to leave, but they do not want to sell. After the defeat against RB Leipzig in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, the Slovenian goalkeeper wrote on social media: “A tense and difficult season is over. We won the Champions League, and we enjoyed great games like at Anfield but failed to fulfil our ambitions. Time to rest. One hug for everyone ”. This hidden message sounds like a farewell. But clearly, this team will never lose the god that holds its temple.
