And Messi became the first football player to be honored at the Laureus World Sports Award, also known as the “Oscar Sports”. He was extremely happy about it.
About the Laureus World Sport Award
The Laureus World Sports Awards is an annual award ceremony to honor individuals and teams from the world of sports along with sporting achievements throughout the year. The award ceremony was established in 1999 by Sport for Good Foundation founding patrons Daimler and Richemont.
Its global partners Mercedes-Benz, IWC Schaffhausen and MUFG support it. The awards support the Laureus Sport for Good work in over 160 community projects in more than 40 countries.
These programs aim to use sports power to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage, and prove that the power of sport can change the world. The name “Laureus” is derived from the Greek word for laurel (a traditional symbol of victory in athletics).
Messi achieve the award of “Sports Oscar”
On February 17th, 2020, The Barcelona captain Lionel Messi and F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton were named joint the World Sportsman winner of the Year award at the 2020 Laureus World Sports Awards.
It was a historical moment for Barcelona captain Messi who became the first football player ever to have been awarded the World Sportsman of the Year. It has been quite a long journey for the Argentine talisman who had recently become the first football player in the world to win six Ballon d’Or titles.
